Infectious disease outbreaks, like the current Coronavirus (COVID-19), can be scary and can affect our mental health.
There are many things we can do to support and manage our wellbeing during such times.
1. Value Yourself
Treat yourself with kindness and respect. Avoid self criticism and make time for hobbies, favourite projects, feeling positive and surrounding yourself with memories and plans are all great ways to relax.
2. Keep Connected to the Positive People
Having strong family and good social connections can help keep us healthier. Laughter, sharing ideas and plans can all help increase a feel good spirit. A phone call or facetime can lift us within minutes and being there for each other can help spur one another on.
3. Look after your body
Eat nutritious meals and drink plenty of water
Avoid cigarettes
Exercise
4. Look after your sleep
Maintain a regular sleep pattern
Cut back on Screen use, caffeine and alcohol
Avoid napping through the day
Be active
Keep a pen and pad at the side of you – if you wake write down worries, thoughts and tasks
5. Quiet your mind
Try meditating and/or prayer. Relaxation classes and prayer can help improve your state of mind. Feeling calm and focussed can help make things feel more manageable and help give clarity.
6. Set Realistic Goals
Achieving goals can release a tremendous sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Being realistic with timeframes, writing steps down and understanding what tools you need are a great start to feeling organised and making things happen.
7. Learning how to deal with Stress
Stress is part of our daily life, exercising, spending time with pets, being in the garden and many other activities can take us away from the immediate pressure we may be experiencing. Smiling and seeing the humour in life can be a great release. Research shows that laughter can boost your immune system, ease pain and relax your body.
8 . Get Help when you need it
Finally, seeking help is a sign of strength and treatment can be effective. Sharing feelings and speaking to individuals are the first steps.
